Enhancing water and wastewater systems to preserve Kotor’s heritage
This case study explores the initiative focused on protecting and preserving the Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a key pillar of Montenegro’s tourism economy. The project aims to rehabilitate and upgrade the water supply systems and install modern wastewater networks in four medieval towns within the Kotor Municipality. These upgrades are essential not only for ensuring reliable water and sanitation services for 8,200 residents but also for safeguarding the environmental and cultural heritage of the area.
About
Challenges:
Problems the Project Aims to Address:
• Deteriorated water supply systems leading to significant water losses and inefficient resource use.
• Lack of adequate wastewater collection and treatment, threatening the Bay of Kotor’s water quality and ecosystem.
• Environmental risks associated with overexploitation of water resources and inadequate sanitation infrastructure.
• Need to preserve the cultural and natural heritage of the Bay of Kotor while supporting sustainable tourism.
Solutions
Technical Solutions Applied by the Project:
Rehabilitation of existing water supply systems to reduce water losses and ensure a reliable supply for 8,200 residents.
Installation of modern wastewater networks connected to the existing wastewater treatment plant, improving sanitation services and environmental protection.
Implementation of advanced water management technologies to enhance operational efficiency and minimize resource overuse. Measures to ensure the financial sustainability of water and wastewater services, supporting long-term infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.
